The Importance of Being Patient in Poker

If you have serious thoughts about becoming a great Poker player, you must learn the virtue of being patient. Yes, there are a lot of strategies that you will have to work on, but do not let the aspect of patience be left behind, for it can spell a big difference in how you progress.

As you learn the ways of the game, you will learn which are the best starting hands, those combinations that will give you the best shot of taking the pot. Just as quickly, you will realize that it is not very often that you will actually get them. Here lies the importance of patience being in your Poker strategy.

Unless what you are holding is complete garbage, then simply wait for the other cards. The problem with a lot of new Poker players is that they fold quickly if they do not get the Aces and face cards. The fact is that with the right Poker strategy, other cards, like number pairs, can be transformed into winning hands.

A pair of 88s for instance, can give you the set, and in No Limit, that is a very strong hand. Even in 7 Card Stud, that can be a formidable hand. Of course, you will need to have a good read on the other players, and this is another aspect where patience is required.

Everyone knows that hand reading is a very effective Poker strategy, but for it to work, you need to take the time to observe the tendencies of the other players on the table. Playing them once will not accomplish this task, but over several sessions you will recognize their mannerisms and tells, but only if you actually take the time to observe.

Of course, one more area where you will need perseverance is when you actually play for money. By recognizing the fact that patience has a place in a Poker strategy, you will eventually learn how to incorporate it. More than anything else, it is a mental challenge, and once you overcome it, you will emerge a better player.
